ISP Review: Juno Free

Juno is a very early player in the Internet service provider business, and a couple of years ago merged with NetZero. The result is a similar pricing arrangement and similar service.

Of course, that means that Juno is a free Internet access provider. You can use the Internet service to log onto the Web and surf away with the peace of mind that comes from knowing that you're not spending a dime on it. Not too bad!

That doesn't mean that you'll get the best ISP experience out there. Instead, you'll probably get a lot of ads, since Juno supports its free Internet service with advertisements -- delivered when users log in and during their surfing session.

Juno also takes steps to make sure that folks aren't abusing the privilege of having a free ISP. That means that it sometimes causes Internet service connections to become unstable for hard-core users of the service.

For you, that means that you can't plan on using Juno all day, every day. You'll quickly find yourself being unable to connect. Instead, Juno encourages moderate Internet use.

Juno, like its sister ISP NetZero, brings you the Internet, pure and simple. And for free. Not a bad deal at first glance, huh?

It isn't -- if you're willing to put up with lots of ads, and restricting yourself to using the Internet Service Provider only occasionally. Log on too often, or for too long, and you could get bounced from the service -- which can really be a pain if you need to check e-mail or visit a Web site right away. And you can definitely forget about staying logged-in all day -- believe me, they've already thought of how to stop you from doing this.

Juno really is only super-useful to get yourself a free email account, or if you need Internet access when you're on the road and don't want to create a whole new account with a provider. Or if you use the Internet only very rarely.

Other than that, take a look at the paid Internet access deals that Juno offers -- you'll find that they're good values (but definitely not free, either!)
