There might
not be any free lunch, but there's certainly free Internet access!
Some of the Internet Service Providers I reviewed offer dialup Internet
access for free -- which is a tremendous savings, especially compared
to the hundreds of dollars you could be spending with other dialup
service providers.
Basically, these providers offer you free Internet access in return
for showing you ads. There are pop-up ads and ads that appear in a
special toolbar that is on your screen all the time.
The free ISPs also make sure that no one takes advantage of the service
by using more than their fair share, so they sometimes boot off power
users. That makes the free Internet Service Providers idea mainly
for infrequent Web use -- or when you need to get online in a pinch.
Do you get what you pay for? In this case, definitely -- and that's
both a good and a bad thing.
The free ISPs that I reviewed, NetZero
and Juno, both deliver
the entire Internet without any frills at all. And they do a good
job of it. But you'll have to read my reviews to understand fully
that these might not be the best ISP options for frequent or heavy
Internet users, or users who want special features like anti-spam
or pop-up ad blocking as part of their Internet Service Provider's
package.
What the free ISPs do excel at however, is providing bare-bones Internet
access. When I make my recommendations to others, I often consider
the free Internet Service Providers a good way of getting a free email
account -- having an extra free email account is always handy -- or
if you need Internet access while you are on the road and don't want
to go through the hassle of setting up an entirely new ISP account.
However, be sure to examine them fully, since they might meet your
needs, after all. There's no one-size-fits-all solution to picking
an ISP, and for getting your money's worth -- even if you're paying
no money at all.
